A potentially new strain of citrus huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening, was discovered in a Brazilian orchard. Citrus huanglongbing is an incurable citrus disease caused by a bacterium-like organism. Preventation and management is possible through use of clean nursery stock, insecticidal control of the psyllid vectors and roguing of infected trees. The State of Sao Paulo, which exports about half of the world market of frozen concentrated orange juice, is reporting wide distribution of HLB throughout the state.
PAS Note: One of the two known psyllid vectors for HLB, Diaphorina citri, has been reported in North America [Florida, US (http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/citrus/acpsyllid.htm) and recently Arroyo Seco, MX (see PAS news story from July 16, 2004)].
