Subject: Melon thrips (Thrips palmi Karny) detected in municipality of Campeche, Campeche, Mexico.

At the beginning of the month of March 2004, Thrips palmi was detected in watermelon crops in the Municipality of Campeche, Campeche, Mexico. At this moment, surveillance and sampling activities are taking place in adjacent municipalities and states to delimit the presence of the pest in the region. In addition, in order to confine and eradicate the spread of T. palmi, cultural, physical, legal and biological control measures have been established.
