Subject: New Phytophthora species on Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Italy

In autumn of 2001, cankers were discovered basally on the trunk of a declining tree in a stand of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Latium, Italy. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from the infected trunk bark. Electrophoretic banding patterns of mycelial proteins and isozymes of the beech isolates were distinct from those of the reference isolates of semipapillate Phytophthora species. The electrophoretic banding patterns, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)- restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern, and sequence of the beech isolates were identical to those of a reference isolate from Quercus cerris (Turkey Oak). Morphological, cultural, and ITS sequence characteristics suggest the isolate is a new, un-described species of Phytophthora. This new species was previously reported to be associated with decline of oak stands but this is the first reporting of it on beech in Italy.
