Subject: New Bursaphelenchus species associated with pine wilt in Vietnam

In Vietnam (Lam Dong province), pine wilt symptoms and dead Pinus kesiya trees were found in several locations and associated with a Bursaphelenchus species. The disease was found in four locations in Lam Dong province in 36% to 48% of the trees. Thirty-eight symptomatic trees from these stands were sampled and Bursaphelenchus was found in all samples.

The species found in Vietnam is morphologically distinct from Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pinewood nematode, but shares the same vector, Monochamus alternatus (pine sawyer beetle). Artificial inoculation of three-year old P. kesiya demonstrated the pathogenicity of this Bursaphelenchus species.

The pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is a significant export issue for North America. The insect vector for both nematode species is present in North America and introduction of a new nematode species capable of infecting pines could have a significant effect on forest health in the NAPPO region and exports of wood products to other countries.
