Subject: Potato yellow vein disease in South America attributed to crinivirus

Recent research on potato yellow vein disease, first observed in Colombia in the 1940's and restricted in its current distribution to South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela), has shown the disease to be associated with potato yellow vein crinivirus (PYVC). That research also demonstrated that weeds, such as Polygonum mepalense (known as "smartweed" at the genus level), were important reservoirs for the crinivirus. Spread of PYVC is also facilitated by the vector Trialeurodes vaporiorum (greenhouse whitefly) and its transmission via trade of seed potatoes. The authors of the crinivirus research concluded that PYVC represents an emerging potential threat to world potato production, due to T. vaporariorum's increasing populations internationally and PYVC's survival in weeds.
