Pink seed of pea (Pisum sativum), a new disease of dry pea previously reported from Alberta, Canada in 1990, was recently detected in northeastern Montana (March 2001) and represents a new report for the United States. Symptoms consist of pale pinkish brown to bright pink discoloration throughout the seed coat, and a slight reduction in seed size. The causal agent for this disease is the bacteria Erwinia rhapontici, whose primary hosts are rhubarb and wheat. This bacteria is currently reported from the United States (CO, ID, KY, ND, OK, and SD) and Canada (Alberta), but is absent from Mexico. Little information is available regarding pink seed of pea or its impacts to pea growers and the pea seed industry.
