Subject: More virulent strain of soybean rust now found in South America

The more aggressive form of soybean rust, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is now confirmed from Brazil and Paraguay. Phakopsora pachyrhizi, separated from P. meibomiae (a weaker form of soybean rust) as a distinct species in 1992, was detected in Hawaii in 1995 and has since moved to South America. In Brazil, 400,000 of the 15 million hectares (38 million acres) planted to soy, or 2.6% of the total crop, has tested positive for rust, causing average losses of 10% in infested areas. Throughout its worldwide distribution, which includes Australia, China, and South Africa, P. pachyrhizi infestations result in yield losses between 10 and 80%. There are also many legume hosts that can harbor soybean rust, including vetch, lupine, bean, and kudzu, complicating detection and control efforts.
