Title: Bactrocera dorsalis (Oriental Fruit Fly) eradicated in California

Report: Effective April 11, 2014, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) removed the Anaheim area of Orange County and the Cerritos area of Los Angeles County, California from the Oriental Fruit Fly (OFF) quarantine area. As a result, no OFF quarantine areas remain in California.

On August 1, 2013, APHIS implemented the OFF quarantine (DA-2013-39) in the Anaheim area of Orange County and the Cerritos area of Los Angeles County, California. That quarantine restricted the interstate movement of regulated articles from that area to prevent the spread of the Oriental fruit fly to non-infested areas of the United States. Since that time, APHIS has cooperated with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to eradicate the transient OFF population through various control actions, including high density trapping, fruit removal, eradication control measures, regulatory quarantine activities, and foliar bait sprays near the detection sites.

Eradication was concluded after sufficient time passed without finding additional Oriental fruit flies in those areas. This removal of the quarantine areas is reflected on the following designated website, which contains a description of all the current federal fruit fly quarantine areas:

Under IPPC standards, Bactrocera dorsalis is considered to be a pest that is eradicated from California and the United States.
