An outbreak of black sigatoka, a fungal disease of bananas, has been confirmed in northern Queensland, Australia. A 50 km quarantine zone has been established around the area. This is the first report of black sigatoka occurring on a commercial banana plantation, although outbreaks on feral bananas have been reported previously. This disease is considered a significant threat to the region's $200 million banana industry.
