Subject: Two new detections of Potato Wart, Synchytrium endobioticum, on Prince Edward Island, Canada
Publicada: October 06, 2002
Source: ProMed mail
Potato Wart Disease (PWD), Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilberszky) Percival, has been detected twice on Prince Edward Island in the 2002 potato season. The two detections occurred on September 4th and 5th and were 15-20 km apart. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is working under a cooperative three year work plan with the U.S. to certify all potatoes eligible for shipping there. Inspection officials, working under this plan, determined that these new detections were only 10 km away from the potato field that was contaminated with PWD in October of 2000; the event that initiated the three-year work plan. These outbreaks are considered "contact" related with movement, via seed potatoes, from an infected field supplying another. Movement of all land, machinery, and equipment is prohibited with sanitation measures, under CFIA supervision, being arranged. Fields involved with these outbreaks were intended for processing. All harvested potatoes were processed. Potato wart is a fungal disease with an over-wintering stage that can remain viable in the soil for up to 30 years and be found at depths 50 cm below the soil surface. Wet conditions are favorable for disease development.
