Subject: Tomicus piniperda misidentified as Tomicus minor
Publicada: March 19, 2001
Source: Canadian Food Inspection Agency
The single specimen detection of Tomicus sp. from Ontario in July, 2000, that was thought to be T. minor (the lesser pine shoot beetle) is actually T. piniperda (the common pine shoot beetle). T. piniperda is already established in the U. S. and Canada. The misidentification was due to a morphological aberration of the specimen. Recent DNA testing of the specimen confirmed that it is T. piniperda.
